Masthead Designs

Masthead Designs

This shows all the possible fonts I could have used on my magazine, in the end I decided to use Komica Axis as I felt it reflected mt magazine and the music genre it is about a lot more compared to the others and this would mean readership would be higher as more of my target audience would buy my magazine as they are appealed to it a lot more. To get hold of the fonts I used the programme Dafont.com also the fact I have decided on my title meant I could easily see what each font looks like on my magazine.

Promotional Methods for My Magazine

This is how I will use social networking to help promote my music magazine and ensure loyalty with readership

Production Log 15

During my lesson today I changed the fonts on all my titles to KOMIKA AXIS through the programme Dafont.com this involved downloading the certain text which I chose and saving it to my home drive and then importing it into InDesign then I had to change all my character styles which was complicated however because I had set everything up it was fairly easy to do.

For example I made titles on my magazine stand out a lot more compared to what they did before which catches the reader’s attention a lot more than it currently did.

Furthermore on my contents page I changed my main image of Brett to a black and white picture with him holding a red fire extinguisher so this then stands out a lot more.

Lastly on my front cover I started to add my cover lines and my main cover line and started to see which colours contrasted this best.

Image Ideas

This is what images influenced what images I took, this includes things such as: props, celebrities and particular magazines.

Production Log 14

During my lesson today I continued improving my magazine greatly, I have been doing this on the programmes Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.
I started to create my front cover, this involved creating my masthead called TUA VIBE and also I photoshoped my main image to take away any sort of background. I added a barcode to make it look like a proper magazine and I added small sell lines at the bottom of the page.

On my contents page I have recently deleted my colour boxes giving the magazine a more professional look, I also made my font smaller making it look better also I added captions to each of my pictures.

I have also created my feature article page which included added main images sub headings and importing my article draft

I also imported more of my photos hoped photos as well as adding more of my feature article draft. This also involved adding captions out of the article.

Sunday 7 December 2014

Production log 13

During my lesson today I started to import my pictures which I had taken at my photo shoot on to my magazine draft.

The other day after school I had done my photo shoot which involved dressing up and taking pictures of my ‘musicians’ which will be featured in my magazine. These pictures were then saved to my account and I have started to choose the pictures which I will use.

With the pictures I had to choose the exact ones to use and before I put them onto my draft I photo shopped them to make each actor in each individual photo photogenic and the pictures could be of the highest quality.
I had a lot of trouble starting to photoshop my pictures mainly due to the fact that I had hardly ever used the programme before and didn’t have as much confidence and experience when using the programme this has lead me to watch demo videos on how to use the software and also having to ask friends for some help when using it however I feel some of my photos have turned out quite good in the end.

I also wrote up my feature article for my article in my magazine which I will be working on in the next lesson, this involved writing a 1500 article which I found okay but had to research some pervious articles with a similar format as had little knowledge on how to exactly write it. This can know be found on my blog under feature article draft.

Next lesson I will continue doing this to a better quality and will hopefully finish my feature article page.

Feature Article first draft

Feature Article First Draft:

All good dreamers and believers have an icon, I simply had to ask Brett who gave him the inspiration and desire to reach the top of the rock and pop ladder.

‘… I have always been interested in the rock/ pop genre, when I was younger I listened to and was inspired by many different singers such as: Mick Jagger, Noel Gallagher, Bono and of course my main idol Liam Gallagher. I used to spend hours studying and learning as much about these types of characters as I could…’

Becoming so famous so quickly has meant Brett has come from being a supermarket store worker and trying to make ends meet to a overnight success with all the money he could ever want and need, this has meant he has had to deal with all the pressures of being a new star in the public’s eyes. I questioned him on this and how he feels he has dealt with it all.

‘… At first I was surprised at how famous I become in such a short space of time because one minute I was stacking shelves in Tesco and singing in the street for fun, and the next minute this ordinary guy from London is performing at Wembley and his songs which were being performed on the street are now in the top 10…’

Brett Moore have just released his second album and is causing controversy in the music field because many other artists who have spent many years trying to get to the top have had to stop in their tracks because of the sudden rise of Brett Moore.

‘… I have a simple dream. That’s to reach the top and stay at the top for as long as possible. The name Brett Moore will be remembered I couldn’t care less whether it’s the right or wrong way I will be remembered and will create headlines through music…’

As I look around I see that Brett is very keen on collecting and using props while on stage, as a keen collector myself I had to ask him about them, why do you collect them and what’s the prop with the  most sentimental value?

‘…Every rock and roll singer has a cupboard full of props to use on stage, I just feel they make me who I am today so I like to have them on display so people like you can see me for who I really am. The prop with the most sentimental value is very hard to stay, but if I did have to choose one its either my shades or my tambourine because when I wear them they make me feel like I have actually become a rock and roll star and without them I feel like the same old Brett Moore…’

Every solo artist wants to be heard of instantly and in Brett’s case he was, but this isn’t always the case for upcoming artists. Have you any words of inspiration to the younger generations trying to make their way to the top?

‘… Yes I have many words for them however some may not be worthy of printing, however what I will say is keep on going and believing and when you do reach the top like me you will soon release that other than the mansion, women always chasing after you and owning millions of pounds it’s not that good, I’m no more happier than what I was 5 years ago in my od life…’

The rumour is that all solo music artists are very individual people and as result can become very lonely as they are always performing on their own but as I look at Brett he doesn’t strike me as the lonely type.

…’ that rumour is a load of rubbish, I only like to perform on my own because no one else is as good as me and if they were on stage with me then my individual performance would be looked down upon because of them ruining it. Other than when I’m performing I am a very sociable person. The friends I class as being the closest to me are the ones I trust the most these are the people I grew up with. Many people who know about the rock/pop genre may have heard of them. Stuart Wilson and Brandon Dube have always been by my side and so I feel without these guys then yes I would be lonely…’

Over the years I have met many different types of characters no more noticeable than Liam Gallagher, have you ever been compared to him because I would say your characteristics are very much like him.

…’ yes many have made the comparison between me and the great that is Liam Gallagher and to be honest I can’t blame them. We are both very iconic figures for music, we both share the same passion for good music and if we feel something is bad were not afraid to say that un like some particular artists around. The only difference is he has been around for many years now whereas I’m just the new kid on the block and if I was able to last as long as he has I would be very honoured and would have to be very successful…’

We have both now progressed on through the house and into one the games room and to my delight we are now playing pool, when I heard the radio being played and it was Capital FM I was shocked, (this is not a station a rock star is expected to be listening to) but just as I am about to say something Brett starts belting out all the words to Nicki Minaj’s new rap hit ‘Anaconda’ this shows just what a character Brett is, when questioned on it he didn’t seem to understand the problem.

…’ I can’t see what is so unusual about It, I love to be able to hear new ways of performing music it helps me develop

my performances and I feel that any singer should have a range of voices which they can call upon when needed. I suppose this makes me the type of person that I am, I can’t help that…’

At Brett’s last gig he was caught drinking alcohol back stage and by the time the performance of the last song came he was completely paralytic. This just shows the huge difference between the good and ugly side of Brett.

…’ it was a genuine mistake, I didn’t mean to drink as much as what I ended up doing and when I had the last drop I genuinely thought the performance was over and I put the bottle down and the stage called me for the last song, I said to myself ‘oh no what I have I done’. This shows anyone can make mistakes if you aren’t the ball twenty four seven…’

It’s well documented that your idol Liam Gallagher is a football fanatic, and has stated that how they are performing has influenced his music have you ever felt this to be the case for you?

…’ yeah I know he loves his football; Manchester City is his team isn’t it? I defiantly feel that when my team QPR start too loose my music is certainly a lot more depressing and more down beat compared to how fast and upbeat it is when we win this can be a good thing as it produces a variety of performances and a element of surprise to each song and each performance, however if your team is as bad as QPR then I can go a long time without producing a upbeat song…’

Lastly when I arrived I saw that you have a younger brother, is there any chance of him making it into the music scene at any time soon? Is rock/pop in the Moore’s blood

…’well he certainly has the looks and the voice like mine so I certainly don’t see a reason to why not, he would be stupid to miss out on a wonderful life like this and my mum and dad are both involved in the music scene, if they give him the encouragement, time and money that they gave me then he certainly will be in with a good chance of making it.

I have heard your two closest friends are recently rising up through the music industry, as I see around your house with all the pictures of you with them you must been really close with them.

‘…well yeah I suppose I have to be, I have spent most of my life with them I went to school with them, I spent most of my holidays with them, I went to football with them they basically are my life and I think I wouldn’t have got were I am today without them…’

This sense of emotion is really not the impression we get from the outside and I can clearly see you have a sensitive side, have you ever been writing music in a sensitive mood and as a result has it  ever been influenced by it meaning it’s a more emotional song compared to your common and well known music.

…’ I would have to say yes because I feel that my most recent song Wonderwall was influenced by my emotion as I was in a dark place when this song was in the process of being written and I feel the final piece was alot more emotional compared to my older pieces...’

After the release of Brett’s new album, tour dates have just been released this is supposedly going to be one of the biggest tours of his career with dates being announced in venues around the world?

‘…yes it’s going to be very excited I am really looking forward to it and so should my fans be as the most amount of money available to my organises  has been spent on this tour no costs have been cut and this will  provide the best music experience of all my fans lives…’

After spending only a couple of hours with Brett I can instantly see the huge amounts of self confidence and gigantic personality he has but I just hope he lives his life sensibly because there have been many cases were huge promising careers have been cut short all due to the fact that their ego’s have over taken their music in their list of priorities and this would be a huge shame for everyone such as: the rock/pop music industry and for individual singers themselves.
This is my feature article which will be included in my magazine on the double page spread.

Production Log 12

During my lesson today I developed my magazine contents page, I again used the programme InDesign and I developed it by changing the colours to suite my colour scheme, I also decided on my particular fonts and added all my font throughout the contents page.  I also added many minor aspects of my magazine to my contents page because this helped it get a more professional look, this included things such as page numbers and the website link.

After I had done all of this I was able to furthermore my development on my magazine contents page I managed to do this through many different things, I made all the fonts the same using paragraph styles I also placed my draft pictures on to the contents page to give me a feel of what I need to take in my photo-shoot.

Production Log 11

During my lesson today I started to make my draft for my music magazine, I used the programme InDesign to help me start designing it and this will be the programme I will use throughout my progress through my magazine.

On InDesign I started to make my first draft, this included making different coloured sections for the pictures, header, and writing. These will help me identify everything I need to do furthermore in the progress of my magazine.
I also started my production diary powerpoint which will show me the progress of my magazine.

Production Log 10

During my lesson today I started to design my magazine contents page.

First of all the contents page was made with just generic colours, but as time went on I was able to devise my own colour scheme which had a true meaning.

For example I used two different shades of blue for my colour scheme this was because of the link between the colour blue and social networking sites, I knew that the colour blue relaxes the audience when reading the magazine, so I decided to make it like using these particular colours.

Next I made my font to have a shadow however I decided that this wasn't effective and made the font plain and simple.

My whole contents page was made on the programme InDesign. I also started making my production log which I will be adding to throughout the process of the making of the magazine.

Production Log 9

During my lesson today I made my audience survey and researched the purpose of the magazines.

For the audience survey I made a questionnaire about it on the software called Survey Monkey. This particular survey was a new experience for me because I had never used it before. This questions I made were particular for my Rock/Pop magazine that I am going to make, the results I gather for this will help make the final design for my magazine. I have also embedded my final product onto my blog.

Furthermore I started to research the purpose of the magazines to the audience which I haven’t done much on but need to, as this will help me collect more information on why I have to make my magazine a certain way.

Production Log 8

During my lesson today I made a Prezi on the Codes and Conventions for a magazine and I also made another Prezi for the representation of the Rock/Pop music genre.

For both of these tasks which I completed I used the software Prezi, I used it for the first time I found it difficult to use at first but once I got used to it it became a lot easier as I knew what I was doing.

First of all my codes and conventions presentation had to be completed and updated because I had originally done it but hadn't completely finished because I had to add more detail to it, this is important to do as it has helped me to understand everything a magazine stands for meaning I will be able to make my own a lot easier.

Furthermore the presentation on the Rock/Pop music genre had to be done, this will be helpful because it has helped me what to base my music magazine on when I make it, also it has helped me know what particular things I should put in the magazine.

Representation

This is my research on the representation of the Rock/Pop music genre, i have looked at the most iconic bands associated with the music genre. I looked at the music festivals this particular genre play at and I have also looked at the outfits the bands commonly wear. Doing this research as given my ideas on what to put in my music magazine because I know no to include sections such as latest ticket releases for music festivals and I also know not to include a clothes section as it isn't a important part of the Rock/Pop music genre.

Codes and Conventions

This is all the codes and conventions of a typical magazine, these will have to be used on my magazine to make it look as proffesional as possible.

Music Magazine Article Analysis

This is my analysis of 3 different music magazines, it will help me create a better magazine as I will have all the knowledge needed for it

Wednesday 1 October 2014

Production Log 7

During my lesson today I analysed three music magazine contents pages. This was a fun and enjoyable task as I have learnt many different aspects of contents pages.

To help me I analysed three contents pages these were Q magazine, NME magazine and Kerrang. These were very different and gave me a good idea on how to make a successful magazine contents page.

This is the contents page of KERRANG which has many different points which I spoke about in detail which will help me make my own magazine contents page successfully.

Furthermore during my analysis of these magazines contents pages I have learnt about many different aspects of magazine contents pages I can now use in my own product. Mainly I will now use author’s notes and I have learnt the importance of images and how powerful they are also I now understand how important it is to follow the conventions of a magazine as they help make the magazine look more professional. Also I have found how important a good clear masthead is with contrasting colours as it draws the reader’s attention.

Analysis of three different contents pages

This is the analaysis of three different contents pages, this research shows me what typical features I should include in my magazine contents page.

Research of 3 front covers

This is a powerpoint with my analysis of 3 different magazines these include: 2 different versions of NME featuring Lily Allen and Liam Gallagher, and also a copy of Q featuring Noel Gallagher.

Thursday 25 September 2014

Production Log 6

During my last Media lesson I learned how to properly evaluate magazine covers and I also started to evaluate one.
I evaluated a cover of NME which had Lily Allen as the main image and the main storyline throughout the magazine.  I evaluated the masthead, main image, sub lines, tag lines, date and price. This particular cover was fairly easy to evaluate because of the weird obscurity of it. The cover had all the basic conventions that a magazine cover should have but most of them had a twist. For example the main sell line looks like a cut out from a newspaper which is significant because it looks more interesting and relates well to the story it’s about.

Furthermore during my research of these magazines covers I have learnt about many different aspects of magazines I can now use in my own product. Mainly I will now use tag lines and sell lines more as I now understand how important they are to help follow the conventions of a magazine and they help make the magazine look more professional. Also I have found how important a main image to drawing the reader’s attention to the specific magazine.

Production Log 5

During my lesson today I sorted my blog out as it was fairly un-organised hopefully it’s a lot better now. I also uploaded my videos of my magazine cover; I did this on the programme Cam Studio I recorded two videos one for my magazine cover and one for my magazine contents page. Each video explained how I made my magazine. I had to upload my videos to YouTube and then upload them to blogger as they wouldn’t download straight to my blog.

Furthermore during this particular lesson I was starting to look at examples of magazine covers. The cover I was closely looking at was a copy of NME, this was mainly about Liam Gallagher from Oasis.

I started to write a analysis of the cover this included things such as: the focal point, masthead, colours and subtitles.

Production Log 4

During my last media lesson I did two things. Firstly I did the evaluation for my magazine called ‘Around Haydon’ this was a fairly short evaluation which consisted of around 700 words. In this evaluation I concluded what I had done to my magazine, for example how I made it, what programmes I used and lastly I evaluated the final product.
Evaluating my skills of the programmes InDesign and Photoshop was fairly easy as my skills were basic and I felt they improved throughout the task. Also my Product was easy to evaluate as I feel it was okay for a first attempt however there is plenty of room for improvement.

Also during this lesson I attempted using cam studio for the first time. I found this difficult as my computer kept flashing green as I experienced problems with the programme.  However felt in the end I got to grips with the programme and had an enjoyable time making the films. These could be improved by trimming the beginning and ends a bit.

Production Log 3

During my lesson I finished by magazine ‘Around Haydon’ this involved finishing and improving my magazine cover and contents page.
I did this by changing the colours of the magazine making it more about Haydon. The colours I changed my magazine to be blue and yellow this is because it’s the colours of Haydon School, so this then was more recognizable to everyone associated Haydon and then people know it’s a Haydon product. The colours I originally used were black and grey background with blue writing. I did this to make the writing contrast but I felt that the Haydon colours were more recognizable and contrasted just as well.

On my contents page I changed the background colour of the Haydon Stage to the same as the contents page colour to give it a more professional look. I felt this worked well as it looks better.

Pictures of Final piece of preliminary task

This is my final piece for my preliminary task, my magazine was called Around Haydon.

Evaluation

Evaluation of Around Haydon:

For my preliminary task I am going to evaluate my magazine, my magazine is called Around Haydon, I called my magazine this because it is giving everyone the latest news from Around Haydon. The colours I have used are blue and yellow this is because it’s the colours of Haydon School, so this then is recognizable to everyone associated Haydon and people know it’s a Haydon product. I had originally planned to have a black and grey background with blue writing. I did this to make the writing contrast but I felt that the Haydon colours were more recognizable and contrasted just as well. On my magazine the type of font I used was Broadway for both my sell lines and masthead this was too add a sophisticated look to my cover and contents page. The font I used varied between sizes the masthead was sized 42 pt to make it a lot bigger compared to the sell lines which was sized 24 pt this was because it is a  normal size so it wasn’t too big or wasn’t too small. The main image on my front cover was of the hero 6th former who saved a Year 7. I did this because it is my main headline so it was based on my main story. I also have the Haydon logo in the top right hand corner, this is my magazine logo which anyone associated with Haydon can recognize.

For the contents page I have pictures of a main entrance, the cafĂ© sign, a year 7 posing in her new uniform and the Haydon stag which is going to be a common theme throughout the magazine. I had again the same school colours as a background colour as they contrast really well.  My pictures on the contents page are rotated to make it like a ladder of progression throughout the day. The contents lines are in yellow so they contrast with the blue background also it stays with the Haydon school colours theme. I have used the same type of font with the same sizing as it’s not too big and not too small. Each contents line has a page next to it, this shows the reader what page they have to go too to see the story to each different headline.

In conclusion the good points about my magazine is that the writing is the same font throughout the magazine, I feel this is good as it doesn’t create confusion for the reader as they know exactly what they are reading also if anything such as adverts are placed on my magazine they will instantly know the difference. Also I felt the layout of pictures on the contents page was a good idea because it shows what the year 7 will experience on a day to day basis. I believe I have met the criteria on my preliminary task

To improve next time I fell my magazine could be of a better quality as it still looks fairly amateurish compared to some examples I had researched before starting mine. To improve I feel I need to get to know the programme a lot better and feel more comfortable when using it. Also I feel the photo on my main cover is of a fairly bad quality, to make my magazine better I could have an improved picture this would improve the quality of my cover.

I feel I used InDesign fairly well considering it was a first attempt, but want to have more knowledge and confidence when using it. When using photoshop I felt again I need more knowledge and confidence when using it.
I will make sure I do all of this when it comes to the real task as I have learnt many skills on using programmes such as InDesign and Photoshop which will only benefit me in the near future.

Around Haydon Magazine Sketch

These pictures show my preliminary task sketches, these are for my front cover and the contents page.

Production Log 2

During my lesson today I started to make my magazine cover and contents page. This involved using the programme InDesign and Photoshop.
I used InDesign for the first time which was challenging but also very interesting, I feel the current mock up I have for my magazine is of a okay quality but I feel was very good for a first attempt. It has a bold masthead which contrasts with the background colours and the focal point is of my hero school who is the main headline in my magazine. The colours I used was black, grey and blue this was because they really contrasted well.

My contents page had a list of the main headlines throughout the magazine, but also had some photos to help explain the headlines in even more detail. I used the same colours as they contrasted well. I rotated the pictures on my contents page to add an effect and something different to just a boring more formal magazine.
